Oppression in the Guise of Liberation
Consider this article here by CNN. I can only say one thing: Have the Belgians gone insane? And the French are soon to follow, it seems. This read like an article done by The Onion, and I couldn't help wishing that at the end of the article it would say "sources: The Onion". But no, it seems that two European countries have truly gone mad.
The Belgian government claims that it is committing this atrocity in the name of women's liberation. Liberation from what? Wasn't the whole point of the Feminist Movement that women decide their own fate unhindered by men? Maybe I read that wrong and it is true that a fish needs a bicycle. I think if they are genuinely concerned with women's right and national security, they'd think twice (or maybe ten times) before they enact this act of madness.
I am no friend to fundamentalist belief systems of any kind, but I also believe in free will, in the societal sense and not the philosophical sense since in the philosophical sense, like this sentence I'm writing, is a run-on argument that really has no conclusion since if we do have free will, then why are we constrained by it? Yes, my previous thought makes no sense because I just came back from DrupalCon and I can only think in circular logic.
First of all, if they are thinking about national security, they should consider how this "act" will be viewed by fundamentalist Muslims. I think they would view this as an attack upon their religion. Useless actions like this by ignorant people get other people all riled up and up in arms, literally. Just think that "The Last Temptation of Christ" got a whole bunch of ignorant people all huffing and puffing saying that the film was an attack upon their personal beliefs, and an affront to the one true God (not Mickey Mouse in this case). Need I say more? Or maybe I should.
Second, how is telling women that they can't veil themselves an act of liberating women? Aren't you telling them what to do, again? I don't understand this logic. Who the fuck do they think they are? Isn't the whole point of liberation the act of not interfering in other people's beliefs, and the right for everyone (EVERYONE) to choose their own destinies? I don't mean destiny in the religious sense since we have free will in this run-on existence of ours. Or at least the illusion that we have free will in a pre-destined existence, and that choice is merely a tool used by predestiny to lure us into its loving arms... but I detract.
Not really, my rant is almost over since I really am too flabbergasted to think clearly, and DrupalCon keeps wanting me to re-use my previous logic, so I don't have to repeat what I've done before. This "genius" act goes against all notions of liberty, and they may as well bring back the Nazi party (OOOOHHHH, yes, I used that word!!!!). This "genius" act attacks one person's right to observe their religion, oppresses women by telling them how they can dress, and in whole it is a fascist maneuver to control a specific segment of the population. Anyone familiar with the term "History"????
IDIOTS!!!!!!
